It's not the SasuSaku because I don't get the vibe that they're a couple anymore. It's not Sakura "being a housewife" because I really don't think she's meant to be. It's not the random pairing of absolutely everyone, either.

It's the lousy parenting. It's...I mean, Sasuke is a little shit. We all know this. And it stands to reason he'd have a hard time being a loving parent, or at least showing emotion toward his kid. It pisses me off that he's not there for her more, but I get it.

Naruto, though? Are you fucking with me? Naruto suffered so much because he was neglected as a kid, why the hell would he do the same thing to his own son when he actually has a chance to be there for him?? Minato didn't have a choice seeing as he was, you know, dead and all, but Naruto did. So what the fuck.

I'm honestly perfectly happy to headcanon my way around the other shit in 700 that bothered me, but this is making me want to just ignore the chapter altogether. Was I the only one really bugged by this??

It's over.

It''s really over.

Once more for old time's sake...Thoughts?? Feelings to vast to control? I'll edit this with mine once I'm over the shock...

EDIT: Okay, so it's still a little too fresh in my mind for me to look at anything critically, so, feelings vomit!

Team Seven back together and Kakashi's flashback and nnnnnooo, everything hurts. My babies. My babies are finally back together after sO MANY YEARS of pain and angst and heartbreak and it felt right. Like, this was all I needed from a finale. Just those three (four) idiots back together again.

Theyyyy heeeeld haaaaaands, excuse me while my little shipping heart beats out of control. And Sasuke's entire chapter of internal monologue waxing poetic on his ~feelings toward Naruto.

And the epilogue...okay, I have mixed feelings on this. I had fun figuring out whose kids were whose based on character design (and Choji's wife looks super cool, anyone remember if we've met her before?), and the bookends with Naruto and his equally punky son were adorable, and it was cool seeing all of our favorites all grown up (SHIKATEMA AT LEAST ONE OF MY OTPS BECAME CANON). The SasuSaku is crazy shoehorned, but I expected nothing less. I figure they had an affair, Sakura realized Sasuke was shit for her and they ended it...but not before she got pregnant. That's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it.

One last question that will never be answered--what was following Sasuke? What did he think he saw? And what the hell is he doing? Is he wandering to atone for his sins a la Himura Kenshin? (Okay, so maybe more like four questions.)

Oh--guess we know Anko lived! That answer only took three years!

Jeeez, it's over. I need fic recs. Anyone?

Okay, so this isn't really a chapter review so much as...thoughts.

Because I was reading this chapter, right, and I got to the last page and my jaw dropped in shock (you know what I'm talking about). My sister was sitting next to me and she was like, "What happened?"

So I show her the page and just watch her face go from concern to horror. And then she just looks at me and says again, stunned, "What happened?" And...see, my sister doesn't read Naruto. Has never read Naruto. She watched a handful of the early anime that I forced her into, knows a lot of the plot and characters just from me rambling about them over the years. So I was kinda surprised that she cared at all, but she did, because when you're stuck with me going on and on about these characters for so long I guess you kinda get invested against your will.

It just really got me thinking about how freaking long this stupid manga has been in my life, you know? It was probably my first major fandom, one of my first hardcore obsessions, and even when I wasn't keeping up with every chapter it was still there. Like, background radiation of my life. I made so many friends through it, and apparently my eternal OTP came from it. Naruto was always lurking in the back of my mind somewhere.

It's going to be really strange when that's not there anymore.

(On an actual chapter-specific note, though, can I say how wonderful it was to see Sasuke smile? Really smile? Because it's literally been years since he did that, and it was so great to see again.)
mildmaythecat: (nano)

I've missed at least...ten, twenty chapters? So I have no fucking clue what's happening (who's wearing the mask? where did Tsunade come from? what happened to Obito? aaaand two years running I'm still wondering where Anko is??). But I heard things that forced me to read the last two chapters, and

I'm just gonna keep telling myself that he's allergic to actually killing off major characters in a permanent way, because otherwise I...I mean, I predicted a "redemption = death thing" a looooong-ass time ago, but that didn't mean it was something I wanted?! DAMMIT WE'VE SUFFERED THROUGH THIS SERIES FOR ALMOST TWENTY YEARS WE HAD DAMN WELL BETTER GET A HAPPY ENDING. THAT IS ALL.

My babies are back together again. And Sakura's actually going to fight and be a badass (?). And Sasuke wants to be Hokage, not for any sort of acknowledgment, but to keep anything like the Uchiha Massacre from happening ever again. I just want to cry. He wants to fix things properly, not just tear everything down. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

(I mean, we're still waiting on Kakashi to complete the team [also, anybody know where Sai went?], but still.)

mildmaythecat: (winning)
It's been a week of awesome finales (Supernatural, Doctor Who, Elementary, Vampire Diaries (which I don't even watch)), and I'm gonna go ahead and add these chapters to the lineup. Even if they're not finales proper, they're part of what I'm assuming is the last story arc of the series, so.

Let's get this out of the way: I CALLED IT. I SO CALLED IT. Rin choosing to die, that is. I'm not gonna go back and find the entry where I called it, so y'all will just have to trust that I did. Huzzah, female character with some agency! (Well. Minus the whole being-made-into-a-jinchuriki-against-her-will-thing, which is really cool by the way, but I'll take what I can get with Kishi.)

Also, Obito didn't do all of this specifically because of her death; she was just a symbol for him of everything the shinobi world does to fuck people up, did I get that right? That's something. I'm just glad there's more to his evilness than "you let the girl dieeeeeeeeeeeee". Yeah.

Can't tell whether Obito was going for manipulative or genuinely comforting when he was telling Kakashi to let go of his guilt. Either way, it was a nice little scene. As was Kakashi throwing Obito's most oft-used quote about protecting comrades back at him--with a nice little twist. Oh, how I love the both of you and your layers and your tragic, beautiful relationship. *happy sigh*

One other thing about the Kakashi/Obito scenes--dunno if it was intentional, but I loved Kakashi calling Obito out on trashing Rin's memory and sacrifice and all of her nobler intentions, everything she did for the sake of the village, by trying to destroy it. Sasuke/Itachi parallels, anyone?

Other things, hmm...Shikamaru being all strategist again, lovely; Sakura and Ino getting to do stuff, also lovely; Minato coming back and saving Naruto's life....AHSHGRWHKBGWKGRW. I know, I know, they've already had their Big Emotional Reunion via the Kyuubi and Naruto's head, but I can't help it. I'm excited to see them interact and possibly fulfill the Back-to-Back Badasses trope.

And I am even more excited to see Sasuke take the battlefield (because he should be with the zombie!Hokages, yes?). He and Naruto will be fighting together, on the same side, for the first time in years and years, or hundreds and hundreds of chapters if you prefer, and they've both gotten so powerful and they'll make such a fantastic team and TEAM SEVEN WILL BE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN I CANNOT TELL YOU WHAT THIS DOES TO ME.

Aghhh, I will never be able to quit this series. Still here until the bitter end, anyone else?

Oh, hell yes. Does this mean Sasuke's finally come to his senses? Has he finally realized that destroying Konoha would render everything Itachi did completely meaningless? I am just so pleased right now. It's about time we saw a little bit of sanity from Sasuke, and maybe this'll give the kid some closure for once. Maybe the last battle of the series won't be between Naruto and Sasuke after all.

Also...Uchiha frakking Kagami! 1) I never thought you would be mentioned again, and 2) I SO CALLED YOU BEING SHISUI'S FATHER. HAH. I am expecting fic on this. And probably Kagami/Tobirama fic too. Come on, you know you saw it.

Oh, also, know it wasn't in this chapter, but the whole Hashirama/Madara arc was really well done. I mean, it sucks in a variety of ways that Mito didn't make a single appearance, even when she really should have (erm, so the Kyuubi just...vanished there? Don't feel like mentioning the woman who sealed it? Okay then). But other than that, I thought the characters and the arc were handled really well. Point to Kishimoto.

This is gonna be a badass fight of badassery. All four zombie!Hokages? Sasuke and Naruto on the same side again? Against Madara and Obito? Yes please. It's been a long freakin' time since I was excited for a battle in this series, but, well, I'm excited.

I am...actually really hopeful for this flashback arc. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a very tentative hope, but considering how long it's been since I had even that concerning this series...

Madara and Hashirama aren't the Naruto-and-Sasuke/Obito-and-Kakashi/Jiraiya-and-Orochimaru/etc. copies we've seen over and over again, which is a happy surprise. Hashirama's got this strange bipolar thing going on, and conflicting senses of idealism and cynicism that make him really interesting to watch. Madara's a snappy, arrogant little punk and sometimes you can almost see shades of what he ends up becoming.

We get to see that these kids have both experienced horrible losses and are capable of discussing them with a shrug and a "people die". That says a lot about the world they've grown up in, and it gives them both motivation that actually makes sense. Which we've all learned not to take for granted. >_>

I have to hand it to Kishimoto for creating surprisingly well-rounded characters in the space of just a few chapters, especially since they're not just rehashing the dynamics of similar pairs we've seen already. And also for creating a pre-Konoha world that actually feels different, more harsh and chaotic, than what we've seen. And also for giving us Tobirama, whom I sort of love already.

Who knows, maybe he'll ruin all of this next chapter. But dammit, I am going to hold out hope for as long as I can! Just please, please Kishimoto, don't make Mito the token girl-with-no-character-she-just-serves-as-a-plot-device-for-the-dudes in this equation, because that one got old a reeeeeally long time ago.

Liking Hashirama, even if he isn't what I was expecting. Really liking the dynamic between him and his brother. REALLY liking how Minato is fanboying over both of them. xD

Liking that Hashirama is willing to try and patch things up with Sasuke, rather than write him off as another insane Uchiha and nothing more.

Not sure how I feel about the fact that there's probably going to be about 2634 chapters of flashback now before we get back to the actual plot. More credence to the theory that Kishimoto is buying time so he can keep making shit up by the seat of his pants, but whatever works.

Laughing at the fact that we are currently getting a flashback within a flashback. What is this series.

And of course, squeeing over baby Madara. He looks so much like Sasuke, as a young man too but especially as a kid, all pouty and adorable. HashiMada shippers, I get the feeling you guys are gonna have a lot of fuel coming your way...

Thoughts? Is anyone else still on this crazy train? xD

Woooow. Haven't seen that much blood in a Naruto chapter since...what, early days of Gaara? Yikes.

So Rin was biologically important? Maybe it had something to do with whatever she always covered up on her face? Think maybe she asked Kakashi to kill her so she wouldn't be useful to the enemy?

Oh, and why the heck were a pair of kids out in the Mist on their own, anyway?

Thoughts? At least we're getting more of a reason for Obito's madness than "Kakashi let the girl die". Well played, Kishi.

I...don't understand.

I don't understand why the tragic backstory of our sweet-Obito-turned-Big-Bad is being dedicated to conversations about pooping.

I don't understand how this emphasizes the tragedy. Or how it pertains to his story. Or hell, how it does anything but further destroy our ability to take Mr. Moon's Eye Plan seriously.

I also don't understand why Zetsu and...whatever the hell Tobi's Mask guy (another Zetsu?) are being so buddy-buddy with Obito. Zetsu's never really acted like this before that I can recall.

I still don't understand how the multiple Zetsus that can apparently be molded onto living bodies (see: Obito) thing works. Or how Obito ended up underground to begin with.

Or, I dunno, what the hell Madara was doing there/how he survived this long/why his zombie body is so much younger than his current one.

Thoughts? Is there a deep meaning to all of this that's going straight over my head?

I'm...I'm so confused.

So Obito was hooked up to Hashirama's body? How does that work? Why did Madara have it (.....)? And why does it look so young?

How is Madara immortal? What did he mean by "entrusting his eyes to someone else"? Where did he get those spares?

How the hell did Obito "fall through" the ground? Am I missing something here?

And of course: HOW IS THIS GOING TO TURN OBITO INTO THE BIG BAD. I'm calling it now: Madara keeps up that stupid mantra (by the way, I REALLY hope he's just screwing with him and doesn't actually believe all that sunshine and rainbows crap, but Obito refuses to believe it because his friends are alive and good things do happen and blah, blah. Then one day he escapes, finds out Rin is dead, has a Heroic BSOD and goes back to Madara, the light sucked out of his world.

...or something. Any theories, thoughts, anything? Because as I said before, I am really confused right now!

I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about this if Tsunade dies.

Madara is being kind of awesome, though. Finally has his fan back! It's a relief to know all our idolizing of the guy hasn't been for naught; defying the Edo Tensei like that is pretty impressive, and he does seem like the super-powerful aloof superiority-complex-ridden ass a lot of us imagined. So that's nice.

No more this chapter on the "I TURNED INTO THE BIG BAD BECAUSE YOU LET THE GIRL DIE" plot. Thank god. I don't think I could've handled it.

So...was that old guy Madara? Was he just hanging around waiting for a kid to almost get crushed in front of him, or did he manufacture the situation with those enemy shinobi in the first place? If the old man is him, then why the body brought back with Edo Tensei so young? So many questions, so little chance of them being properly answered...

Anyway, the plot thickens, and I would love to hear your thoughts. :3

(Holy SHIT that's a lot of chapters)

Okay. I have mixed feelings about this...

"AWESOME" because hello, Obito. Uchihas crawling out of the woodwork. Obito and Madara teaming up. Kakashi angst over his not-so-dead boyfriend. All of my weak spots are being hit here, people.

"WTF" because...of course. Of course this is all going to be because he blames Kakashi for Rin's freaking death. Really? That's what you're going with, Kishimoto? All this time and THAT is what we get? He let the girl die? REALLYREALLYREALLY--

Right. So. Not impressed with that. For one shining moment I thought we might get a complex and thrilling backstory on how our Obito became this completely different person, but if this is Just no.

This chapter merited a freaking review, okay.

First: SHISUI. FREAKING SHISUI. *grabby hands* I will never stop being excited when he shows up. So, what, does Itachi have one of his eyes or something? How does that work?

Second: The Massacre, ow, that never quits being painful. But seeing Itachi break down so completely was a new level of heartbreaking. (Even if his teeth in that panel kind of eeked me out? A little?)

Third: AND IIIIIIIIIIIEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUU~ Or, well, that was what was playing through my head during the entire chapter. With a title like that, can you blame me? But oh my gawd, that last page, let me just flail all over everything. My first OTP. And Itachi, at least, can finally go in peace.

I'm seeing an interesting parallel between Itachi and his parents here, too. Fugaku and Mikoto understood why Itachi did what he did, and even though they didn't agree with it, even though they thought it was against everything they believed, they forgave him for it. Fugaku even said right before death that he was proud of Itachi. And then we see the same thing with the brothers--Itachi is well aware that what Sasuke's going to do will hurt a lot of innocent people, not to mention negate everything he himself did in the name of protecting the village and the world. It's going to render his sacrifice and the death of their family meaningless. But he doesn't care. He loves his brother, no matter what choices Sasuke makes.

If you'll allow me a moment of Tumblr vernacular...MY FEELS.

(It'll be interesting to see if this parallel pops up again with Naruto or even Sasuke himself.)

Soo, thoughts? It's been a long time since I was excited for a Naruto chapter, or even read one (*cough*), but hopefully I'll stay in the loop this time!
mildmaythecat: (Default)
So I continue to be disgracefully absent from this fandom. Sorry about that. Part of the reason is that none of my manga-reading sites are working; mangastream quit putting the chapters up and for whatever reason mangareader isn't working for me?

So I was wondering if any of y'all could catch me up--is the battle with Kabutomaru still going? What's the status of the Uchiha brotherly bond? What's going on with Naruto/8284734739 other characters? Have any of the questions we've been asking been answered; for example, who is Tobi?

(Also, if somebody has a good manga scan site that doesn't give out viruses like candy I would REALLY love a link.)

Thanks in advance, lovelies~
